Chronic Stress:
Here's How to Obliterate
It from Your Life:

(Excerpted from Why Make Yourself Crazy? 400 Ways to
Rid Your Life of Needless Stress
by G. Gaynor McTigue)

Always view yourself as
ahead, not behind.

This small change in perspective can alter your approach to everything. When you perpetually see yourself behind schedule, never caught up, forever lacking in something...your emphasis is always on need. And that puts unrelenting, unhealthy pressure on you. But view yourself as ahead of the game (and most of us truly are) and the pressure almost immediately eases, and your needs diminish, because you're grateful for what you already have. You can move forward confidently from a position of strength, rather than struggle from one of weakness. It's all in the way you look at it. Why make yourself crazy?

Steer clear of negative people.

You know them well: the whiners, the ones who find fault with everything, who always lay a hard luck story on you, who constantly give you grief over harmless trifles, or make wholesale denunciations of people, institutions and cultures that don't suit their fancy or conform to their way of thinking. Unless you're stuck with them, shun them. They'll pull you down, darken your outlook, try to make your life as miserable as theirs. Who needs that? And if you are stuck with them (relatives, coworkers, housemates) don't agree with or encourage them. In fact, say nothing and simply leave the scene whenever they launch into one of their diatribes. Why make yourself crazy?

Confront your real
hidden motives.

Today, we’re layers of excuses and justifications removed from the real reasons we act and feel the way do. What is the real reason you’re angry with a loved one? You resent a neighbor or coworker? You overschedule your life? You need to keep acquiring things? You want to win so badly? Be honest, look beneath your apparent motives and cut to the truth. You may find pride, envy, guilt, or insecurity lurking beneath. And once you acknowledge it, you can start to curb the stressful drives, or defuse the combustible situations, these feelings create. Come clean with your motives. The last person you need to fool is yourself. Why make yourself crazy?

Do what needs to
be done first...first.

This should be automatic, but for many reasons, we’ll put off more important and pressing things to take care of lesser priorities first. Not only does it leave that bigger thing hanging over us, it often deprives us of the time and energy we’ll need to accomplish the important task. Every morning, take a few moments to consider what project would make most sense to get out of the way first. Then meet it head on, without becoming sidetracked, without trying to squeeze something else in between. Then go on to the next most critical...and watch the stress ease away. Why make yourself crazy?

Remember: you're one
in eight billion.

So solving the problems of the world doesn't rest solely on your shoulders. (Although it sometimes seems that way.) And with all those people out there, it's a cinch there's going to be a conflict somewhere at any given time. And a few people are going to go a little haywire now and then. That's what makes the headlines, not the billions of people who live relatively quiet, law-abiding lives. If you view the world through the unforgiving eye of the media, of course doomsday is always going to seem just outside your door. But it isn't so. Pull back and put things in their rightful perspective. In fact, the amazing reality is, most of us 8 billion get along pretty well. Why make yourself crazy?
