Stressors: How to Rid
Your Life of Them:

(Excerpted from Why Make Yourself Crazy? 400 Ways to
Rid Your Life of Needless Stress
by G. Gaynor McTigue)

Eliminate meaningless deadlines.

Our lives have become one long game of beat the clock. Crammed with arbitrary and unrealistic time constraints imposed by ourselves and others that serve only to make us more pressured, anxious and stressed out. For no worthwhile reason. Avoid the trap of assigning timeframes to everything you do, especially if you have little idea how long it will take. But, you say, I need a deadline or I simply won't get around to doing it. If that's the case, it's not a deadline you need, it's a goal. Make your goal one of completing a project in a careful, professional, satisfying manner. In other words, as long as it takes to do it right. Or maybe your goal is to make the project more fun and interesting, or to develop a new and more expedient way of doing it. In any case, save your nerves and your energy  for the few real deadlines we face...like April 15th. Why make yourself crazy?

Don't drive while distracted.

And I know many do. But when you're talking on your cell phone, texting, putting on makeup, eating breakfast, or (not uncommon) READING!—while operating a multi-ton motor vehicle—you're putting yourself and others in danger. For basically naught. Studies show, whether you're driving or not, multitasking is less effective, less productive than doing things sequentially. Why? Because you're not doing either task well. Plus, it's stressful, so you're burning nervous energy—energy you won't have when you need it later on. Still not convinced? A recent study shows that the constant distractions of multitasking destroys cells in the hippocampus. It's frying your brain! So be safe. Drive focused. Why make yourself crazy?

Don't get all worked
up over little things.

Like a late charge for a payment you made on time…not being enrolled in a program you signed up for…a no-show appointment...a package that doesn't arrive...an article left behind. Your initial reaction might be one of outrage, injustice, exasperation. Mostly because now you have to find out what went wrong and correct it—on top of everything else you have to do. Stay calm. Expect to be blindsided by these unpleasant little surprises...and roll with them. You'll find that things are rarely as bad as your initial reaction to them. And often have a perfectly rational explanation...or a simple solution. Why make yourself crazy?

It's not what happens to
 you, it's how you react.

In any given day, you'll have progress and setbacks, triumphs and failures. That you can bet on. But as good a day as some people have, they'll manage to find something to fret about. ("It's just luck, it won't last, I'm destined for misery.") And as bad a day as others have, they'll see the good in it. ("So what? I'm still alive, still kicking and nothing's going to stop me.") Which attitude will win over your day? And the next day? And the next? You have control over that: to enjoy your accomplishments without diminishing them; to accept your failures as opportunities to learn. You have the power to make every day a positive outcome. Because it's not what happens to you, it's how you react to it. Why make yourself crazy?

How long must you
endure a bad choice?

Somehow—you don't quite know why, or how— you think you picked the wrong career, school, doctor, business partner, babysitter, contractor, financial advisor, supplier... And it's stressing you to no end. First, be sure you're not just being peevish, impatient, intractable, or one-sided. What may be required is a simple adjustment, compromise or getting-used-to period. Give it at least that. For more serious cases, a face-to-face sit-down or outside advice may be in order. It will cut the tension and bring issues to the surface. But if you've tried to make it work, in earnest—without success—it's time to accept your mistake and move to correct it. The worst thing to do is let it grind on unresolved and suffer increasingly harmful consequences. We all make bad choices. The difference is in how and when we endeavor to address them. Why make yourself crazy?
