Channel your anger into
productive energy.


Anger is like steam. Held in, it can build to the point of bursting, leaving damage in its wake. But also like steam, which can propel an engine, you can release your anger in positive ways. Make a conscious effort not to dwell or feed on it. Instead, get busy. Channel your anger into rational and composed ways to deal with the problem that caused it. You'll be more likely to dispel it peacefully rather than pop off in a manner you might regret. Why make yourself crazy?



Get it off your
chest immediately.


You’ve been grossly or ungraciously snubbed, insulted, ignored, mistreated, or misunderstood. Don't hold it in and let it fester. It can breed harmful stress and resentment, impede your ability to function, destroy an important relationship. In a composed manner, as soon as convenient, let the other party know how upset you are. Explain why you feel hurt. Ask that suitable recompense or apology be made. You may not always get the satisfaction you seek, but confronting the issue will help vent your anger and relieve some of the distress you're feeling. It also sends the message you won't tolerate such treatment in the future. When it really smarts, they need to hear from you. Why make yourself crazy?


Change your thinking patterns.


Ingrained negative thoughts and stock reactions often perpetuate the cycle of stress and anxiety. They sabotage any chance at peace and enjoyment. Example: you react with fear every time a new project is assigned to you—even though you're competent and successful! Or you treat like a calamity even the tiniest mishap or delay. Or take what's merely a helpful suggestion as a stinging criticism. First, listen to what you're thinking at these moments. Then consciously dispute any unwarranted reaction or overreaction. Notice how these incidents don't amount to anything when they happen to others. So why let them bedevil you? A lot of unjustified reactions are carryovers from childhood. They have no logical place in your life today. You have to identify and dismantle them over time. Why make yourself crazy?


Don't trust yourself
when you're upset.

 

You're furious at someone. Flustered by an embarrassing thing you did. Or upset about a serious blunder you made. In that distressed state, you're unfocused, distracted, likely to make costly errors and thus compound the misery you're feeling. In those situations, it's wise to consciously slow down and proceed with caution, as if navigating a ship through perilous waters. Even better, don't attempt anything important or complicated until you've had a chance to calm and collect yourself. You can't see clearly when you're seeing red. Why make yourself crazy?


Don't act out confrontations
in your head.


What angry scenes we stage in our minds! Reenactments of arguments recently fought. Vengeful thoughts of what we'll say next time we see that so-and-so. Seething dialogs and envisioned acts of retribution aimed at whatever current nemesis we're up against. These inner rants can poison your temperament, and have an all-consuming effect far out of proportion to whatever caused it. Become skilled at sidestepping these ill feelings before they have a chance to devour you. Let things play out in reality, rather than your mind. You'll find they usually resolve themselves a lot more peacefully than you imagined. Allowing yourself to get worked up only fuels your ire again and again. It isn't worth it. Why make yourself crazy?
