Do you stress out
in social situations?


Are you uncomfortable mingling at a party? Do you fear whatever you say will be trite and uninteresting? Do you feel conspicuous and ill at ease? This can be perfectly normal, especially if it's people you don't know in an unfamiliar setting. Fretting about it will only add to your angst. When you're in an "I don't know anyone!" state, try turning the tables. Assume others are feeling out of place and it's your job to make them comfortable. This will take the focus off you, give you reason to initiate contact and allow you to show an interest in someone else, an admirable social grace. Do this soon after you arrive so the tension of having to break the ice doesn’t mount. It'll help you thrive in any social situation. Why make yourself crazy?



Don't be so self-conscious.

Most people aren't judging you. In fact, they're usually so wrapped up in the business at hand, or in their own image, they're barely noticing what you're wearing, how you're coming off, or that everything isn't just so. To prove it, think how easily you dismiss (or don't even notice) the minor flaws of others in light of their bigger, more positive traits. Being self-conscious needlessly distracts you from your larger purpose. Accept that your presentation will always have imperfections. They actually make you more human, more likable. Lighten up, be natural. Why make yourself crazy?


Get out and socialize.


Tear yourself away from the total immersion of your work and spend some diverting wind-down time with family, friends and associates. The harder it is to do, the more you need to do it. Periodic disengagement replenishes energy and sparks ideas, lets you step back and see what direction you're headed, alerts you if you're being too single-minded. This is not a luxury, it's a necessity. And try not to bring your travails along with you. The more you get lost in your diversion, the greater the benefits will be. Get out, have fun and be a heck of a lot better off for it. Why make yourself crazy?


Don't be a slave to your image.

 

How much unnecessary stress, excessive work and lost time with loved ones do you incur in the name of how you look to others? Are where you live, what you drive, how you dress, whom you socialize with, and where you send your kids to school dictated more by what's best for you and your family...or by the image you want to project? Carefully scrutinize your motives. You may find that a simpler lifestyle within your means might leave you with less of what impresses others...but more of what makes your life easier, happier and more fulfilling. Why make yourself crazy?


You needn't associate with
people you don't like.


You may find some individuals distasteful, egotistical, rude, selfish, condescending, unprincipled, raunchy, rowdy, or just plain creepy. Or maybe you can't explain why you don't like someone...you just don't. It stresses you just to be in their presence. When you are, treat them with the same kindness and respect you'd afford anyone else. Then quickly move on. If you can avoid them altogether, so much the better. There's no rule, law or moral precept that says you have to socialize or do business with everyone. (Love thy neighbor doesn't mean you have to like them.) There are enough positive, upbeat people to surround yourself with, without having to consort with those who bum you out. Why make yourself crazy?
