Stressed Mom?
Here Are Some Suggestions:

(Excerpted from Why Make Yourself Crazy? 400 Ways to
Rid Your Life of Needless Stress
by G. Gaynor McTigue)

If your kids can't play
nicely, separate them.

How many times do you need to go in and scold your kids for fighting and squabbling? Only once, if you play it smart. When they can't get along, separate them. Deny them the privilege of each other's company until they can work out a peaceful solution. It teaches them the valuable skills of compromise and negotiation. It will make them appreciate each other more. And will give you a needed break. So when the kids start going at it, divide and conquer. Why make yourself crazy?

Boil your kids' choices
down to either/or.

Getting your kids involved in decision-making is a good thing. It teaches them responsibility, builds confidence and self-reliance. But giving them too many choices can be confusing, stressful and overwhelming. (Just as it is for adults!) So simplify their selection process. Examples: "Would you like to go to the park today? Or do a craft?" "Do you want to wear your blue shirt, or the yellow?" Also, couching an unwanted prospect in a choice can make it more palatable: "It's time for bed. Would you like me to read this story...or that one?" Uncomplicated either/or decisions. They'll make your child's life easier. They'll make your life easier. Why make yourself crazy?

Put the kids to work.

For many children, life is a posh resort, every need fulfilled, parents waiting on them hand and foot. Okay when they're very young, foolish when they're old enough to take on responsibility...and take some of the burden off you. Love them, but don't spoil them. Assign chores and projects commensurate with their age (making beds, clearing the table, vacuuming the floor, taking the garbage out). Pay them for extra, non-routine work like washing the car or pulling weeds. And don't be so quick to step in for them when they start to whine or balk. Toughing it out builds character. They win. You win. Why make yourself crazy?

Play with the kids as
soon as you get home.

Yes, you have a million other things to do. Or maybe you'd just like to relax. But spending time with your kids first will show them you love them above all else. It will satisfy their need to be with you and preempt both their nagging and your putting them off. Chances are, they'll soon get distracted anyway and go off to do something else, leaving you with time to yourself...without the guilt. Make a fuss over the kids first. Why make yourself crazy?

Don't groom your kids,
for a life of stress.

In your efforts to expose your child to every known activity, sport and pursuit on the planet, you may be guaranteeing them one thing. A stressed-out future. Regardless of what you tell them, rushing frantically from venue to venue sends the message that this is the way life proceeds. They'll inevitably follow suit. Start setting a different example now. Pare down activities so each one can be more richly and leisurely enjoyed. Build in more free, unpressured time that lets their imaginations take flight. Kids are notoriously overscheduled. And they hardly need to experience everything before adulthood, or what will be left? Removing that stress from their life—and yours—will leave everyone healthier and happier. Why make yourselves crazy?
